Summer may be winding down, but that doesn't mean scuba diving season is over. In fact, late summer and fall can be a great time to finally earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification.
If you've spent the summer thinking about learning to scuba dive but haven't made the jump yet, there's still plenty of time.

You Don't Have to Wait Until Next Summer
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that scuba certification is something you need to do at the beginning of summer.
It's not.
Scuba diving is a year-round activity, and getting certified in the fall can actually put you in a great position for winter and spring travel.
Planning a cruise? A Caribbean vacation? A trip to Cozumel, Curaçao, Bonaire or another tropical destination?
Getting certified before you leave means you don't have to spend valuable vacation time sitting through classes and completing basic training. Instead, you can arrive ready to dive.
How Scuba Certification Works
Your journey starts with the PADI Open Water Diver course, the world's most recognized entry-level scuba certification.
The course is divided into three main parts.
1. PADI eLearning
After registering, you'll receive access to PADI's online learning program.
You can complete the academic portion on your own schedule from your phone, tablet or computer.
2. Confined Water Training
Next, you'll work with our instructors to learn and practice the skills you'll need underwater.
You'll learn things like equipment setup, mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control and how to safely handle common situations that can occur while diving.
The goal isn't simply to check skills off a list. We want you to become comfortable and confident underwater.
3. Open Water Checkout Dives
After completing your confined water training, you'll complete four open water training dives.
We regularly conduct checkout dives at The Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, Texas, where students can put everything they've learned into practice in an actual open-water environment.
Complete those dives and congratulations—you are officially a PADI Open Water Diver.
Fall Is a Great Time to Learn
There are several advantages to starting your scuba certification later in the year.
First, you're getting ahead of the rush. Instead of waiting until right before a summer vacation, you can complete your certification now and have plenty of time to continue diving and building experience.
It's also a great opportunity to continue your training.
After Open Water, divers can move into courses such as:
- Enriched Air (Nitrox)
- Advanced Open Water Diver
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Navigation
- Deep Diver
- Rescue Diver
- And other specialty courses
The more you dive, the more comfortable and capable you become.
Don't Wait Until Your Vacation to Learn
We see people make this mistake all the time.
They book a beautiful Caribbean vacation and then decide they want to learn to scuba dive after they arrive.
While getting certified on vacation is certainly possible, you're using part of your vacation for training.
Getting certified here in Southeast Texas means you can take care of the coursework and training before your trip.
